Facts
Personality: With an active brain and
ever - alert nature, this little dog needs
to be kept busy or it can get into
mischief. If not dissuaded, the Silky
can be come yappy with boredom.
Digging can be a popular pastime and
new owners must be alert to keep their
puppy well occupied. This breed has a
strong sense of territory and can make
its terrier disposition known towards
strangers or other pets who may stray
onto its patch. The Silky needs to be
handled firmly and obedience training
should be started immediately it arrives
in its new home. It is very agile and has
loads of stamina so regular exercise
and activity are needed to keep it fit
and happy.

Suitable for: The Australian Silky
Terrier can be ideal as a family pet,
either in a big backyard or in a town
house. It loves the companionship of
the youngsters or elderly members of
the family alike and, as it loves to
chase a ball, is easy to exercise. With
that curious nature and abundant
energy, it will be happy to go for a walk
and help fulfil its companion role in life.
It is important that obedience training
be started early to teach it to fit into
daily routine and be well mannered in
the house and yard.

Breed Care
The grey-blue and tan silky coat is its
crowning glory and after a bath and a
good brushing, shines in the sunshine.
A daily brushing and regular shampoo
will keep the coat in top condition.
Occasional trimming will keep the coat
tidy and often the hair from the knees
down is trimmed short. For comfort’s
sake, the fall of hair over the eyes can
be tied up in a topknot. Toenails
should be kept short thus allowing its
feet to stay in good condition for its
many activities.

Monthly:  It should be checked
regularly for ticks and should have
necessary treatment for heartworm,
ticks and fleas. Nails should also be
checked and trimmed regularly.

Regular: Gastro-intestinal worming,
heartworm and vaccinations.
